How to Plan Activities for Your Elderly Loved One if They Have Dementia

Does your elderly loved one have dementia? If so, you might be wondering how they are going to participate in certain activities. You might be unsure of what activities they are going to be capable of taking part in, as well. With all the studies and research that has been done regarding dementia, there are some tips that can help you to plan activities for your elderly loved one.

Paying Attention to Their Interests

Homecare Bethesda, MD: Dementia and Seniors

What is your elderly loved one interested in? Do they enjoy music, arts and crafts, sports, or other activities? What brings them joy and happiness? By paying attention to your elderly loved one’s interests, you can determine what types of activities they would like to take part in the most. Once you figure out which activities they would enjoy, you can put these activities on the calendar. You, other family members, or home care providers can help your loved one participate in the activities that have been put on the calendar.

Dressing Properly

If you are going to plan activities for your elderly loved one, be sure they are dressed appropriately. If your elderly loved one has dementia, that is going to make it more difficult for them to get through an activity without issues. However, one of the things you can help them with, to make things go more smoothly, is the way they dress. For instance, if your elderly loved one is going to take part in an outdoor activity during the summer, you should ensure they are dressed for the weather. If your loved one gets too hot, this could make the activity much less enjoyable.

Pay Attention to Pacing

When you are creating an activity schedule for your elderly loved one who has dementia, be sure to pay attention to the pacing. Many people who have dementia need to have increased energy when participating in certain activities. If this is the case for your elderly loved one, it is important to avoid putting too many activities that involve being active on the schedule at once. Spread these activities out over the course of the week, instead of putting them all into one day.

These are some of the tips that can help you and home care providers to schedule and plan activities for your elderly loved one. Those who have dementia should still participate in the activities they enjoy. While there might be more issues during these activities, if you can help your elderly loved one to follow these tips, things can go much smoother.
